I truly think I should live in London, or anywhere that afternoon tea is served and enjoyed on a regular basis. I love drinking tea, and I appreciate the details of the experience…the lovely china, the delicious scones, and the joy of just slowing down and relaxing over a pot of fresh brewed tea.
Since I can’t move to London at this point in my life, I have found a wonderful tea room right in my part of the world. It is called Clara J’s at 219, and it is located in the uptown area of Maumee, Ohio.
I discovered Clara J’s a few years ago, and since that time we have enjoyed many outings there. Our most recent visit was just before school started a couple of weeks ago.
I always know it will be a special afternoon when I enter the tea room and take in the scenery. There are three rooms used for dining…the cream room, the pink room, and the chocolate room (think neapolitan colors).
No matter what room you are seated in, the vintage linens and eclectic china patterns and tea pots create such a lovely atmosphere.
There are also baskets of accessories…hats, gloves, shawls, feather boas…for you to borrow while you enjoy afternoon tea.
There are usually two featured teas each day, and they have an complete menu of teas from which to choose. The voodoo tea was quite delicious that day!
If you have a young child in your group, Clara J’s is so wonderful to accommodate them by serving lemonade…if they would prefer to skip the tea.
Once the tea is served, the scones along with fresh lemon curd and marmalade are brought to the table.
The next course is really three courses served together on a three tiered silver tray. It consists of savories, sandwiches, and sweets. As many times as I’ve seen it, I am still impressed with the presentation of this course! And yes, it tastes as good as it looks.
I simply love all the details of the food!
Once again, Clara J’s was kind enough to provide child friendly food options for my youngest, as well as vegetarian items for my oldest daughter.
Clara J’s never disappoints. I highly recommend experiencing tea time there if you are ever in the Toledo area. It is a lovely way to spend an afternoon!
Note…Clara J’s serves proper tea at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Reservations are required.

I have a friend that lives in Maumee. I’m passing this along to her in case she hasn’t found them yet.

She will love it, if she hasn’t already discovered it.

Beautiful! The tea ceremony is so special and encourages us to slow down and savor not only the tea, but the moment!
